Senior Systems Analyst (IBM Power i)

Position Summary:

This Senior Systems Analyst with Netcracker is responsible for managing our ICOMS environment within our Global Managed Services Organization. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 5 years’ experience administering ICOMS and familiar with ICOMS Environments resident on an IBM Power i, running on Power Systems OS/400.  This candidate will need to be familiar with the most common aspects of IBM i system administration, including work management, system security, backup and recovery, Environment management (including Job Queue manipulation, basic security, JOBD creation and maintenance, etc.), and other daily tasks.

We are open to having this position sit remotely within the United States or Canada (east coast preferably). 

  • Interact with Global Managed Services (GMS) customers on a daily basis in support of the ICOMS environments managed by GMS – hosted or remote by
    • Resolving environment related problems reported by GMS customers through CSS as assigned
    • Completing service requests submitted by GMS customers, including managing customer user ids, remote print writers and/or queues, environment refreshes, Batch Interface Processes, Interfaces, and similar requests
    • Submitting service requests for data center services needed by GMS customers
    • Acting as liaison between GMS customer and Netcracker IT Group to facilitate completion of requests
    • Researching system and database journals to retrieve auditing information in support of internal and customer data investigations
  • Monitor systems to ensure
    • peak and problem free operation
    • compliance with security standards
  • Configure and support
    • Software based replication, particularly using Precisely MIMIX HA, as it relates to both HA and DR implementations.
    • System monitoring, particularly using Help Systems Halcyon, especially as it relates to interface / job monitoring
    • Tape management systems, particularly using IBM’s BRMS, especially as it relates to daily backup routines
    • System compliance and audit functions, particularly using Precisely Enforcive Enterprise Security, especially as it relates to PCI compliance
    • Automation functions, particularly using Help Systems Robot SCHEDULE and REPLAY, or IBM’s Advanced Job Scheduler
    • Browser based GUI interface, particularly using Rocket Software’s LegaSuite application over Netcracker’s ICOMS solution.
  • Maintain application environments by
    • Reviewing patches and release updates and constructing a plan to apply them to Netcracker and third party applications
    • Managing storage resources for production and test partitions (e.g. environment sizing)
    • Creating slices for ICOMS databases for internal and end user testing
    • Creating custom programming using CL, RPG, or other available languages in support of production processing
    • Performing regular maintenance tasks in a timely manner to ensure PCI compliance
  • Regularly review
    • Security bulletins issued by US-CERT, IBM, and other vendors, especially as they pertain to PCI compliance. Resolve any vulnerabilities in a timely manner
    • System performance statistics, forecasted growth data, and project system resource utilization, bringing any concerns to the attention of management and IBM System Administrators.
    • Assist with creation and completion of Disaster Recovery Plans and participate in annual Disaster Recovery Exercises, focusing on validating business continuity plans for GMS customers. Update the DR plans to reflect current configurations, environments, and processes.
  • May be asked to perform similar duties for internal (development/test) systems as well.
  • May be asked to perform consulting services for customers outside of GMS

Experience & Requirements:

ICOMS support background inclusive of familiarity with ICOMS Encryption, ICOMS Bundle and hyper installation, Environment setup and maintenance, ICOMS Batch Interface Processing (BIP), IBM Power systems object hierarchy.

  • Understand how to manipulate file systems and objects, including management of working directory/current library, changing/listing directories/libraries, rename/copy/move/delete files/objects, create/rename/delete directories/libraries, locate files/objects, change permissions on files/objects, etc.
  • Manage printing, including listing status of print queues and jobs, printing to a specific print queue, and cancelling print jobs. Transferring a file between systems, and determining IP address/host names assigned to a system.
  • User management, including how to Reset passwords, Show which groups a user belongs to, View and understand user permissions, Control logged-in users, and Understand the login process (what happens during login)
  • Understand Basic process control, including how to determine which processes are currently running on the system, stop a process, or running or pending job, use job scheduler to manage scheduled tasks, and view pending jobs
  • Perform other operator tasks, such as describe the function and use of IBM i Navigator, view system logs and errors
  • 5 or more years of experience administering ICOMS environments   
  • At least one major ICOMS Release Apply involving significant downtime to the user community (for example, ICOMS 8.2 to ICOMS 8.3)  
  • Strong experience in using journaling, especially remote journaling  
  • Understands the differences between independent ASPs, *SYSBAS, and traditional ASPs  
  • Understands IBM i security administration, compliance, and access control
  • Keeps up with Release Updates to GMS applications, and has an awareness of new features and functions  
  • and is familiar with the ICOMS documentation, and knows where to find updates as they are issued.
  • Excellent command of the English language and excellent customer communication skills
  • Ability to train operations monitoring staff on how to respond to alerts, assist with ensuring “switch readiness” on HA/DR systems, and perform less complex maintenance window activities associated with the ICOMS application.

Other Highly Desired Skills:

  • Has experience installing software upgrades and updates to third party and in-house developed applications
  • Is familiar with the use of MIMIX software for logical replication of database information to redundant systems for high availability and disaster recovery deployments
  • Is familiar with the configuration and management of ODBC / JDBC / TCP socket communications on IBM i systems communicating with other applications which may be running on Unix / Linux & or Windows systems .
  • Is familiar with current PCI-DSS standards and how to ensure PCI compliance on IBM i operating system and databases containing PCI sensitive data
  • Has experience managing medium projects, lasting a few weeks, involving two or more teams.
  • Must be able to provide 24x7 on-call support coverage - on a rotational basis with other team members.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Engineering or related field
